Hi Guys,

Jeff Roth has made an excellent set of tools with
instructions for this operation. I have used them and
highly recommend them. He looks at this web site and I will
tell himas well. Also, without going into detail, you can
adapt a large spring compressor to do the same thing. I
borrowed one from a friend and actually put Mort Wood's
together with one hand while talking on the telephone with
the other. Honest, no fish story! Sadly, this tool was not
returned to him by another enthusiast but I will be making
one shortly for another machine I'm putting together. Its
been beautifully painted and I can't afford a disaster.

I have made another shape on the nut,so I can come up on an
assemble spring length for the barrel spring on 180 mm.
I pressed the barrel spring together, fit a bushing of
plastic ,which was split in to parts,on the shaft just
between the yoke and nut for barrel.Fit a plastic strip to
keep the 2 bushing in place and assemble it to the
handlebar. Now I pressed as Russel wrote the 2 front forks
spring together (170mm).Hold them with heavy strips( be
careful) and assemble the complete fork as Ian wrote. After
that just cut the strips.Erik

Hello Erik , the assembled spring length on both my bikes is
1/4 inches (185 ?mm) so if yours is only 5.7 inches then I
think something is wrong with your set up , hope you sort it
