Hi Steve,
I thank you for taking the time to respond to my query re
rocker pedal, there is some valuable information in your
reply.
In the fall issue 1998 AMCA magazine there is a feature
about John Ballack listing some of his inventions, among
them a rocker type clutch for 20's Henderson & Indian Fours.
I beleave I have one of these & am currently trying to
establish how it operates, a little difficult because the
engine out of my Deluxe at present. And the pedal has had
some obvious modifications. It looks very much like an Indian
pedal, but is much heavier and of cast construction. It
features one pivot pin & two holes at the rear for the push
rod, one is above the pivot & one below the pivot. It is a
very well made part & I thought it might be quite nice to
use in operation.
Thank You for your interest Steve. Kind Regards Graeme.

Hi Graeme,

I'm a little confused to your reference to a rocker clutch
pedal for a Deluxe Henderson. By chance are you referring to
he optional handle bar clutch linkage assembly similar to
the Big X 20 series bikes which allowed the rider to hold
the clutch out after it was disengaged by foot. This
permitted the rider to be able to step on the brake while on
hill and still have a foot down if the bike was fitted
with reverse and the hack wasn't on. Historically,
antidotal information attributes this modification to the
Chicago police. It also requires a stud fitted on the gas
tank over the magneto to hold the mag advance/retard lever
and linkage which is lost with the left handlebar clutch
conversion. Later there was another spring loaded clutch
pedal attachment which allowed the pedal to be locked out by
small "L" bracket attachment to the foot board bolt, a
precursor to the KJ setup. I've looked at some period
Ballock catalogs and haven't seen a "rocker" style clutch
which to me doesn't lend itself well to a
clutch/transmission with a pressure plate and throw out
bearing. If you have a picture in the catalog you can
email, I would be very interested in seeing it as we learn
something about these bikes all the time. Regards, Steve
