Those photos and many more were part of a book put together by Schwinn after they closed in 1931. The purpose of the book was to show the manufacturing capability of the factory. EVERYTHING was for sale and there were pages and pages listing every piece of machinery, details of the factory building itself, photos of the motorcycle production days as well as the Penguin airplane engine project. Many of these pictures were used in the 1916 Factory Tour book that Charlie Carter reproduced back in the 80's. Gene ----- ORIGINAL MESSAGE FOLLOWS ----- Marvellous photos Gene, thanks for those, far more than we hoped might exist. Do we know the history of how these photos come to be. Some sort of interest in aviation or military ? ----- ORIGINAL MESSAGE FOLLOWS ----- Indeed, The Excelsior factory was engaged in making these engines during the war as well as at least a cursory test run on one of the upper floors of the factory. I have a few pictures of the engine manufacturing process and testing facility. I'll post them for you. Pretty interesting stuff! Gene |
