Think I'll give the splitdorf one more try. I think it is a very capable and reliable generator if its redone right. I did it myself and got 1000 miles out of it only cleaning it up and using the 90 year old windings. and then the lights went dim. This time I will send it to a local guy to do the rebuild. There is still ONE guy in Toronto that rewinds them which he uses. My local rebuilder will make sure about things like brush spring pressure (which I think may have contributed to the commutator spitting soldier and spraying molten varnish...) Also I found a very new DOT approved LED headlight which I plan to use along with a 6 to 12 volt converter.
