Having been fortunate to own many Hendersons and seen many more, I have come to be confident in the Ballock list with respect to Deluxe's and KJ's. Actually, the Detroit numbers for the later bikes look pretty good too. I have a theory about the very early numbers. Mike Smith owned a '12 motor around 667. This was the highest number he found. If one assumes 800 built, 50% increases over the next two years put the end numbers around 2000 and 3800 respectively. 1912 engines are one year only. 1913 and 1914 engines can be differentiated to some extent by looking at the inside of the top case. The later engines had extra bosses added in way of the cylinder bolt holes under the deck. I have #19xx w/o the bosses and worked on #24xx that had them. The 1915 cases are identified externally by the addition of a spring loaded drain valve through the transfer case and the elimination of the boss to bolt the rear fender to the top of the transfer cases. Additionally, the plugs in '13&14 were in the tops of the cylinders and were relocated to the side of the cylinder in '15.

I can't be sure of '18 through '21 except to say that I think the H motors were the earlier ones built in Detroit before the transfer and the Z's were the later ones assembled in Chicago. I've seen 2Z motors but no 2H's. I can't even speculate about K's due to the rarity of them.

As far as I know this is the only source. No one knows how accurate it is though as it is dealer info and not factory info. My brothers is titled as a 30 and the serial # puts it as a 31 according to this info.
