I first became aware of Carl at a car show in the early 80ies where he was showing his Deluxe. In the usual Carl manner he was present to share his motorcycle with interested people. Turns out my dad and Carl had worked together in the 50ies. As we walked away my dad told me that I should get to know Carl as he would probably be a good friend... It also happened that Carl's shop was roughly about 10 buildings away from our family business and so I feel I was very lucky to have Carl so close by. I am not certian how many times I kept him late at his shop with whatever we happened to be doing that day which could be anything from talking to working on a project of some sort. I always knew when he was coming or going home as he drove by our shop as his Dodge 6 cylinder van had a distinct sound, in time everybody who worked at our place knew that sound as well, and from time to time you would hear "there goes Carl". If I was having a bad day I could sneak away to Carls for therapy in the form of conversation, taking a knap in the recliner, seeing what he was working on or borrowing one of his motorcycles for a short spin around the nieghborhood. The 6 with the sidecar is a chick magnet. Everybody at our workplace knew what a Henderson was even if they where not motorcycle people. Carl inspired me in many ways, when I started my boardtrack racer project I told Carl I was not sure that I could handle it, his responce was we can do anything we want, and if we don't know how to do it we have a friend somewhere who does. And so the project was completed with this attitude with Carl giving insight, advice and a helping hand or tool as needed. I could go on with many, many examples of what a fine person Carl was, how intelegent he was and how good he was to me, he had a very positive impact on my life. I will miss eating lunch with Carl at his shop, but the most important thing Carl taught me was that I can do anything I want and if I don't know how I have a friend somewhere who does...
