I too enjoyed the phone calls to Carl's shop for a little Henderson advice. I tried to avoid his lunch hour in the Rocky Mountain Time Zone, so as to not interrupt a canned tuna and cracker snack, or a nap on the cot.

One thing we enjoyed about Carl was his enthusiasm for riding the Hendersons, especially in the mountains. He was a fixture of the Rocky Mountain Chapter's D.J. runs: Durango to Telluride, Colorado Springs to Buena Vista, Grand Lake Lodge, then over Trail Ridge Road.

I learned a valuable lesson on the Steamboat Run riding with Carl and Dorothy, followed by Kevin Linville, all of us running Hendersons. Carl always rode a little slower than most, cruising along at not more than 50 m.ph. He was treating his Henderson to a modest, not arduous, work out on every road run.

The scenery was always easier to appreciate at Carl's speed.

When we rode to the top of Mount Evans on another day he and Dorothy were bringing the V-6 Sidecar rig up last. The squeal of his rear brake annouced their arrival. A small crowd of admirers gathered, as usually happenned. This time it included a group of Harley engineers test running three of their (at the time) experimantal Twin Cam Harleys up to the peak at 14,240'. Needless to say they were duly impressed with Carl's 1930 vintage experimental V-6 Henderson idling there on the top of the mountain.

I share Carl's love of the outdoors, especially when seen astride a Henderson motorcycle. I'll be thinking of you friend...at about 50 m.p.h.
