Nick,

It took me a minute to figure out that a "grub screw" is what we call a "socket head set screw" over here.

Whatever you call it, I like your idea!

Do you mean to drill the hole in the kickstarter crank so that the hole is accessible through the round hole in the "socket" where you put a punch to drive the pin out?

If so, 99.9% of picky judges wouldn't even look there, and if they did, I suspect that anyone with an old motorcycle has spent some amount of time looking for a lost part on the side of the road...

Speaking of calling things by different names, when I visited Perry Ruiter in Canada a couple months ago, we had a conversation about the different Canadian and US measures. I pointed out that there are several "correct" measures:

Oil pressure - should be measured in Pounds per Square Inch. Otherwise, why would Henderson gauges read that way?

Electrical current flow - should be measured in amperes. Same argument.

Velocity - Either miles per hour or kilometers per hour is correct. Hen supplied both, so apparently even they couldn't agree on this.

Liquid capacity (fuel) - doesn't matter. I just fill the (gas, petrol, whatever) tanks until they overflow, or I run out of money - whichever occurs first.

Liquid capacity (lubricating oil) - doesn't matter. Over here, oil comes in "quarts" and "gallons" neither of which has a direct relationship with the capacity of a Henderson crankcase.

Headlight intensity - Dim and Bright. Some British bikes have "Dip", but I think that's just a mis-spelling. Modern usage is "Low and High", but I suppose that's alright too.

Tire Pressure - doesn't matter. The Rider's Handbook doesn't mention this, so I just fill 'em up until they're nice and firm.

Hope this clears things up.

Dave

Since the first message appeared recently about loosing the tapered pin and then the kickstarter lever I have been thinking about how I could stop this happening on my DeLuxe. The solution I have come up with is to drill and tap a hole in the side of the kickstart lever that will line up with the tapered pin so that a grub screw can be installed. The tapered pin will need to have a dimple or flat put in it to line up with the hole so that the grubscrew has something to lock in to. It should be possible to do this in such a way that it will only be visible when the kickstarter is in the open position ready for starting the engine. For those who are worried about this effecting their concours machines it will be invisible when the bike is on display with the kickstarter in the closed position. I hope my thoughts help solve a problem that is obviously worrying a few people, Regards Nick Mulcahy.
