Subject:Henderson KJ,KL Super X Super Sport differences Date:Fri Sep 1 03:11:49 2006
Dear Folks,

I will try to keep this short, just found this site, which is great.
Have been overseas for years and I have been a Henderson Excelsior nut for a long time, therefore I sold my KJ which I restored, but still have my Super Sport. So I thought I would maybe add some thoughts and notes as I have seen many comments about differences.
There are quite a few unnoticed differences.
The information that I have is packed away came from an org Henderson dealer by the name of Fred Rizzo who has passed away a few years ago at 98 years old. I knew Fred very well for about 15 years, as he still had his org KL and rode it until 95 years old. I have personnaly seen and have parts so this is what I know, my Super Sport was sold new by Fred, I have witnessed these parts and have had both types in my hands, hope this helps someone.

Anyway, the bikes, KL,KJ Super X, Supersport
KL and Supersport, This is what they should have according to Fred and the paper work I have.
Short Sport handle bars, taller gearing, the rest is engine stuff. Fylwheels are about half the size in thickness, lighter for faster Revs, both used doomed higher quality pistons. Some SS used just a taller piston .250" taller, I think to make up the lack of cyls, as you can see later.
The other stuff is less obvious. The rocker arms are longer, on the Super Sport the rocker arm hanger is also offset and different to provide more lift, valves were good quality and bigger, but not a lot, I just remember one size up, push rods are bigger on the SS, ALL THE CORRECT CYLINDERS for both models are .250"ths shorter!! So don't forget to check the cyls when your building, You have to measure to know. Cams are very different especially on the SS, The carbs are bigger with a number of choices according to the lit, lots of fuel. My SS has the same carb as an Indian 74 Chief. One last thing! Fred said some SS's were stroked to about 60cuin, I know about hillclimbers, but this was the road bike, not the climber, he claimed to have sold one, which was red, I do not know much about this version, although it is in some of the paper work. Looks like they used the taller cyls for the application. Probably forgot some things, Sorry I do not have paper work with me, just hope this helps someone and they know to look at the differnces.
Regards Ben
