I have a 1930 KJ, with matching cases. I know the history
of the bike from when it was first purchased from the
Detroit Police Department. On top of the transmission case,
here are no casting numbers like I've seen on other KJ's.
These cases have never been ground on or otherwise messed
with, and was wondering if anyone else has ever seen this.
It has all the correct stampings everywhere else on the
cases.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

These alphanumeric characters were attached with screws, a
common practice even today. This was done to enable the
foundry or others to change dates and other information as
needed. Having been in the foundry business I will postulate
that a date change was taking place and incomplete when the
pattern was inadvertantly placed back in service. If that
is the case you might be able to see where the character
screws holes left small depressions if they had not already
filled with sand. Just a thought. The new KJ upper and
lower cases do not have the dates on them, just the KJ and
part #.
